Middle East E-commerce Logistics Enters Year-End Peak: Stocking, Overseas Warehouses and Last-Mile COD
As White Friday, national-day promotions and the year-end shopping season approach, Middle East e-commerce enters its busiest stretch. The UAE and Saudi Arabia remain the twin engines of the region: online order volumes in Riyadh, Jeddah and Dubai typically rise 30–50% quarter on quarter in Q4, and air and sea capacity from China to the Gulf has been tightening since mid-October.
Stocking: the sea freight window is closing
Sea transit from South China to Jebel Ali currently runs about 15–22 days; with clearance and warehousing on top, mid-to-late October is effectively the last sea window for peak-season inventory. Sellers who miss it turn to air freight — one to three days from South China to Dubai or Riyadh — but peak air rates are volatile. A practical approach is to tier SKUs by margin and velocity: high-margin urgent replenishment by air, stable movers by FCL or LCL sea freight.
Overseas warehouses: from optional to essential
Regional platforms such as noon and Amazon.ae keep raising fulfilment-speed requirements, and locally stocked listings clearly win traffic. Three points matter when setting up in Dubai or Riyadh:
- Importer of record: confirm importer qualifications and VAT registration before cargo sails;
- Inbound mix: combine direct FCL deliveries with LCL distribution to control inventory carrying cost;
- Returns: return rates are high in Gulf e-commerce — verify the warehouse's reverse-logistics capability in advance.
Last mile: COD still dominates, address quality is the hard constraint
Cash on delivery still accounts for the majority of orders in the region, and first-attempt delivery success directly drives cash collection. Address standardisation is limited in parts of Saudi Arabia, so validate phone numbers and address details before dispatch and choose last-mile channels that offer pre-delivery calls. Time-sensitive orders can reach most of Dubai next-day; Riyadh and Jeddah typically take one to three days.
