Asia–Europe Ocean Rates Fall for 13th Straight Week as Carriers Push October FAK Hikes

2026-10-14

With China's Golden Week behind us, Asia–Europe ocean pricing is the topic of the season. Multiple indices show China–North Europe spot rates falling for a thirteenth consecutive week: the Shanghai–Rotterdam benchmark sits near $3,300 per FEU, and some forwarders are quoting as low as $2,650 per FEU to UK ports such as Felixstowe and Southampton. The Mediterranean correction is deeper still — roughly 43% below July peaks — while North Europe is down about 34% over the same period.

The gap between carrier announcements and real deals

In contrast to soft spot deals, carriers are determined to push prices back up. Market tracking indicates several top carriers plan to raise FAK (freight all kinds) rates from October 19, targeting a broad $4,000–4,200 per FEU band. Industry observers widely note, however, that a clear gap remains between these posted targets and actual transaction levels around $3,000–3,300. The increases look more like an attempt to anchor expectations than an imminent market reality; whether they stick depends on volume support in the coming weeks.

The core variable pressuring rates is returning capacity. As more vessels resume Suez Canal transits, shorter round trips release effective capacity back into the market. If the return accelerates beyond expectations, carrier efforts to defend rates will become harder still.

Watch the surcharges, not just the base rate

Even if base rates drift lower, total cost may not follow. Advisory firms warn that this round of carrier pricing action may arrive as fuel and peak-season surcharges rather than higher base rates. When requesting quotes, always ask for an all-in figure and itemize bunker, congestion and destination handling charges to avoid booking cheap and settling dear.

Q4 planning recommendations

  • Contract shippers: the annual tender season is opening with 13 weeks of spot declines strengthening the buyer's hand. Consider index-linked guardrails in new contracts.
  • Spot shippers: no need to lock long-term pricing; compare quotes on a rolling two-to-three-week cycle, but book no later than seven days before departure — rollover risk rises around the effective date of rate announcements.
  • Time-critical cargo: air freight from East and South China to Europe currently takes two to four days and works as an express top-up while ocean schedules remain unstable.
